Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in the month of June.

The first Father’s day on record was June 19, 1910. It was created by Washington’s State, Sonora Dodd for his father William Smart. William Smart was Civil War veteran and raised his six children as a single father. Why June? That was the month of his birthday.

Father’s Day wasn’t recognized until 1966 thanks to President Lyndon Johnson, who designated the third Sunday of June to be Father’s Day.

Father’s Day become a permanent holiday in 1972, thanks to President Richard Nixon who signed Father’s Day as a public law.

The USA has had two sets of father-son Presidents.

  1. John Adams was the 2nd U.S. President (1797-1801). His son John Quincy Adams became the 6th US President (1825-1829).
  2. George Bush was the 41st U.S. President (1989-1993). His son George W. Bush became the 43rd U.S. President (2001-2009).

Hallmark recognizes Father’s Day as the 4th holiday for sending cards. 110 million cards are exchanged for Father’s Day. 50% of these cards are given to dads by sons and daughters.

The most popular stores to buy Father’s Day gifts are sporting goods, hardware and men’s clothing stores.
